I apologize for not having much reading material for you all recently. It's been kind of hectic/stressful around here, I've been sick with a mega-cold.
I'll come right out and say it - we put Jayne to sleep last Friday. It's not a decision we made lightly, and we have the full support of his breeder and our friends that knew Jayne. Those of you who knew Jayne knew he was tough and unforgiving with a low bite threshold, and that's not a recipe for a trustworthy dog. We loved him very much, but love alone doesn't make a dog happy, and Jayne wasn't happy in his current situation. (I could go on a long diatribe on the negative effects of neutering too young and how I feel that it was one of the major reasons why I had to say goodbye to a wonderful dog, but I won't. At least not right now. I don't have the energy for it.) Steve is shaken by it all. Jayne was his buddy, and he feels like he somehow failed his best friend. I'm hoping he can forge a bond with Tab, but it'll take time. Speaking of Tab, he's really the silver lining in this situation. We're keeping him.
In other news... Talla had surgery to remove a lump from her neck. We originally thought it was a salivary gland but ended up being an abnormal growth of tissue likely due to trauma or infection. The drains were removed yesterday and we're letting her roam around without her Cone of Shame as long as we're able to supervise her. Sutures come out in a few weeks. We now call her Frankenpuppy. Click here if you want to see what was removed, and click here to see Talla's neck post-op. (I figured links would be better than subjecting everyone to gore directly on the blog.)
Our refrigerator died this week. A new one has been ordered and is scheduled to arrive next Monday, but for now we're living on canned foods and take-out. Blech.
We bought a vinyl plotter, but so far we've had no luck actually getting the damn thing to work. None of our computers have the appropriate ports for it, and the software/driver installation doesn't seem to be working. I can't access the owners manual because it's part of the installation, and most of the quick-start guide is either grossly inaccurate or in Chinese. I've looked online for help but so far have found none. It's one big gigantic headache right now, and I'm getting frustrated. The product description of this plotter has been one big lie, and if I'd known it wouldn't have worked with my current computers I never would have bought it.
It's cold and dark and gross outside, because it's winter. The stress of putting Jayne to sleep somehow dropped my body's defenses and I ended up with a cold that has been kicking my ass for the past four days. It's been too cold to let the dogs run around outside much, so they're all going stir-crazy... which in turn is making me go stir-crazy.
At least I have pretty dogs. That's something, right?
